Question Brake light bulb changing problems

Hi all - hope you're doing well.

What should be an easy change for the brake light is anything but. Last evening put the torx head screw driver into the torx head screw of the tail light housing. The screw barely turned. The screw did have a tiny bit of visible rust so thought that might be the problem. Sprayed WD-40 on it last night and then attempted to turn this evening. It doesn't want to budge - maybe about 1/8 inch if that.

So for now I can't replace the brake light bulb in the tail light. I'm afraid of stripping the threads on the screw. I haven't attempted the high-mounted brake light (just one of the three is burned out). I'm thinking it's more important to focus on the tail light brake light before the high-mounted.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any trick to releasing the screw?

Any help would be so much appreciated.

Thanks for dropping by.

I wouldn't worry about stripping the screw, it's easy enough to replace. What's rusted is a small metal hinge/tab that folds over a metal edge with a hole and threads in it so the screw will tighten into it. (can't find a picture of one right now). What you want is some penetrating oil that will soak into the screw and hinge and then you use a lot of counter-clockwise pressure, a little at a time.

As far as the 3rd brake light. When you open the hatch you;ll see one large piece of interior colored plastic covering the center where the light is. It's held on by about 3 hidden snaps on each side. Just grab hold of one side or the other and gently but forcefully pull away from the window towards you. it will only pull about 1/2 inch before the snaps will give way and allow you to take the rest of the covering away.

Crewzin, thanks for stopping by and responding.

Do you have any recommendations for a penetrating oil to use? And do I wait a while after applying it before unscrewing the screw?

Thank you for the instructions and guidance on removing the cover to the 3rd brake light. Haynes had me somewhat stumped by there instructions.

Will have to get to this tomorrow as it is now raining.

Thanks a bunch.

Don't have to thank me for stopping by ...I'm always around.

Yes, the penetrating oil should be allowed to sit for a couple hours at lease so it gets seep into the parts that are rusted together. Any hardware store should have a small can of it for a couple dollars. No need to by a pint or quart.

Check the hardware store for the 3rd brake light that you need. It takes.....bulb No. 921-W16W Once you get that center piece off, you'll see how the bulb holder works. If I remember correctly there's a screw on each end that takes the holder off.

After you spray it down. screw it back in, then out. Until you work it out. Get a small tube of anti seize and put a little dab on the threads when you reinstall.

Hay lady. Been a while!

Thanks for the additional help and suggestions Crewzin and Busted. I so much appreciate this forum and coming here for help.

Already have the bulbs. Picked them up at CarQuest earlier today. Told them what I needed. The parts guy looked it up on the computer and brought me back two bulbs. CLB 3157 for the tail light/brake light and CLB 921 for the "high-mounted brake light" as it's referred to in Haynes. The parts guy called it something "eye" or "eye" something. But I didn't pay attention to that.

Yes Busted - it's been awhile, sadly. I'm looking forward to browsing around here again and learning.

Success!!!

Liquid Wrench penetrating oil is amazing. After removing the screw the rest of the tail light/brake light was a piece of cake.

The trim piece covering the third brake light assembly wasn't much of a challenge to remove. I forgot to look for screws in the assembly though and just removed the red bulb cover by pushing in the clips that held each side. I then could see the bulb's position by it's reflection and pulled it up. Unfortunately, the bulb broke off at the neck. No problem though...I was able to grasp the filament with my fingers and pull the rest out. Insert new bulb and then reassemble.

There are 5 clips total that hold the trim cover in place. Aligning the two on each side was fairly easy. The middle clip aligns into the assembly and I couldn't see well enough to align that also. So, once I had each side aligned I rapped the trim cover and assume the middle clip was also aligned.

All back in place - and functioning well.

Wish all repairs/replacements were so easy.

Thanks again guys.
