Default timing belt mileage

It seems to be popular thought that the timing belt ought to be changed near 100,000 miles. I'm curious as to how far some have gone beyond the 100,000 when the belt broke and had to be fixed. How about letting us know.

it's never happened to me, but some have failed well before 100,000. it's not only the mileage but time, as well.

Some have reported 60 to 70 k failure. I did read on that said he had 145k about a year or so ago.

Exclamation Re: timing belt mileage

Keeping it simple:

If you sell your 09 and buy the 10 don't do the timing belt

If you plan on keeping the 09 change the belt

I have a friend and hers broke at 73k in an 07. I've also talked to PT owners who didn't even know what a timing belt was and they were well over 100k. I just did mine and 85k and it had some dry rot on it. It might have lasted another 20k but why take the chance. Pay now or pay more later.

Are these interference motors? How hard is the timing belt to change?

Thanks,
Dave

these are non-interference engines. for a skilled mechanic, probably a 10 hour job. prepare to pay aound $1200, depending on where you live.

Thanks for the response. I do all of my own maintenance, have not even touched the wifes car yet other than an oil change, and airing up the tires.

I plan on selling the vehicle soon, so if its not an interference motor I may not do the timing belt. We shall see what time brings for me I suppose.
