Default towing with 2006 base model

Hi all,
We are moving from Madison WI to Sacramento (2000 miles) and I am planning to tow a 4'x8' uhaul cargo trailer with my 2006 PT Cruiser (base model, automatic). I will not put a lot in the trailer. Total weight will be a maximum of 1200 lb including the trailer (slightly above the recommended weight) and maybe some more stuff in the car (400 pounds).
Do you guys think that we can make it? Has anyone had a similar experience before?
Thanks a lot!

The main problem I forsee is when you are driving in the mountains/hills along the continental divide along the way.........I would highly recommend seeing about getting a rental truck(U-Haul or similar) with a hitch ball loaded with your belongings, and get a car 'tow dolly' or car 'transport trailer' for your PT Cruiser to pull behind it;I think your method may be asking ALOT of your 2.4L Base PT Cruiser.......Just my 2 cents worth: "I probably wouldn't do what your thinking of doing"

While i'm sure the engine could do it, the demands on the transmission have me a bit worried... If it was just a few hundred miles, i'd likely go for it, carefully, but over that long of a drive, that's asking a lot of the transmission, and engine... The mountains also would have me worried, as well, at even half that weight.

I'd have to say i wouldn't do it... It'd probably be better to get a truck, and then pull the PT behind it, or just drive the PT. I wouldn't be comfortable towing that much, that far, behind a PT, though.

I pull my teardrop cargo trailer to all the events that I attend and the total weight of trailer & cargo I pull is around 650-700 lbs. I just got back from Cruisin Clairon 13 a 800 mile trips and a lot of mountains to cross . The Cruiszr made the trip with no problem except when using cruise control . The trans would be constantly shifting . I personally would not want to pull much more than 800-900 lbs with the 2.4 NA not to mention the additional 400lbs in the cruiser.
Good luck on your trip

Yeah.....He's going to be pulling more than 2X that weight!.....I think the cost of a new transmission and/or engine will FAR outweigh the additional cost of a one-way Uhaul truck & tow dolly/trailer.....JMHO

Good choice!.......We just don't want you(and family?) to get stuck in some BFE place like Bozman,Mt. or some other 'lighten your wallet town' along your way because you burned up your tranny, engine,or both.
