Default 2006 PT Engine Knock..Like New Vehicle

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser with the normally aspirated 2.4 engine. The car was driven by my mother who is 90 so it only has 3,500 miles and is like new. Oil has been changed regularly.

Yesterday, for the first time we started getting the famous top end engine knock. It sounds like noisy valves or lifters and does it when the engine is cold as well as hot. No warning lights come on.

It seems odd that this problem would occur on a vehicle which is basically new. Would appreciate opinions. Thanks.

You have a 2006 Pt with only 3500 miles on it????
wow

Id say you need tochange the oil and run it for awhile might be from sitting for the last 7 years

If it were me ,id put 2 quarts of Marvel Mystery Oil in it and drive it for about 1000 miles then change it again but then for me 1000 miles is just one week of going to work

No, the oil is regular spec. I've changed the oil and filter annually even though it's only been driven about 500 miles per year.

mls; the owners manual calls for 5w30 oil with a MS-6395 rating. Valvoline is one brand of non-synthetic oil that meets the specs.

These engines have excellent valve trains, so I don't understand the 'famous top end engine knock' your talking about?

Apparently, there is a recurring noise issue with the 2.4 engine.
