Default What Tools To Remove And Install Drum Brake Springs?

Last nite for some reason one of my rear drum brakes seized up.
I figure it was probably because I was working on the front and had it jacked up high with the hand brake on so it self adjusted to the point of no movement.

In order to reset the brake I cleaned, disassembled and re-assembled it.
The hardest part of the deal was getting the springs back on, especially the top one.

So the question is:
Is there a tool that is specially made of this type of spring configuration?

I Googled around but the tools I see don't look like they will work on the PT's drum brakes.

Thanks for any help on this.

There is a special tool with a hook on it for the spring. You can see it in the picture below.

Here's the whole tool with an end on it to do the little springs in the center of the shoes.

Thumbs up Re: What Tools To Remove And Install Drum Brake Springs?

If you don't have one,you can check most big name parts stores(Autozone) should have 'loan-a-tool' program.....You leave a deposit for the tool, and get your $ back when you return the tool.

Thanks CREWZIN

That looks like it will do the trick.
Although the hole on my PT's brakes is right up against the "shoe" I think there will be enough clearance.

Given that this is what people are using I assume it won't mar the new shoe going in.
Should I be putting some sort of protective layer on the pad where the pliers make contact?

Although you can't see it, the part that touches the pad is flat and lays against the pad, not hurting it. It looks pointy in the picture but there's a flat end on it.

Good idea from randyincctx about borrowing the tool.

Thanks randyincctx

I saw this video but my PT's springs aren't configured that way.
The springs are similar to what CREWZIN posted only a little longer.

However I really do appreciate your help. Thanks again

Thanks for the fast reply CREWZIN

I am going to buy me one of those pliers before my next drum brake job.

Also I don't see where randyincctx posted about borrowing the tool. I only see the video at my end.

Edit: Ok I see the post from randyincctx now. My browser did not refresh properly.
I would buy one because I look after more then one car and it will come in handy. This was the fourth time I could have used it in the last 24 months. Struggling with those springs is a real PITA.

His post on borrowing was No#3 on this thread.
