Default "Pop" when shifting into reverse

Within the past week, I have started to hear a "pop" sound when shifting the automatic tranny into reverse before backing out in the morning. It sounds like it is coming from lower center of the engine compartment, but hard to tell for sure. Other than that, transmission behavior is completely normal. Fluid levels are good. Any ideas?

Thanks. Sounds similar, but not exactly the same. Also, my PT was manufactured after the dates listed in the TSB. I am hoping this is not indicative of some major failure that is pending.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this sounds exactly like my issue! Although, my is an 06. Is it possible this situation could happen to the newer style?

I just assumed that either my mounts have gone bad or the drive axle' cv joint have gone bad.

santandharma: I just re-read my reply....I didn't mean to sound dismissive of that TSB information you provided. It just isn't an exact fit for my issue. I do wonder if that rubber gasket was something that was added to later models at the time of manufacture - if so, then it could be that mine has worn out.

The sound I'm hearing always happens after a cold start, when I shift into reverse for the first time when the engine is still cold. I've run through forward and reverse multiple times after the car is warm and cannot get the sound to repeat. I'm hoping it is more of a nuisance than an actual problem.

HanaTurbo, no worries about chiming in. Others here have more experience than me, but my thoughts on your suggestions: when my mounts were bad, I heard a "thunk" almost every time I goosed the throttle. It was pretty easy to make the sound repeat. It it was a CV joint, I'm pretty sure the noise would be constant or at least a lot more frequent than what I'm hearing.

05vanilla,

Thanks for your input, you are correct. It is easy to replicate and happens often. Looks like I have to get some new axles.

Forgot to update the cause/resolution on this: stupidity! When I replaced the engine torque struts, I incorrectly torqued the lower strut. It came loose, resulting in that "pop" sound. Oops.

That could happen to anyone. Great that you followed up. Somebody else will do it to.
