Default Timing belt installation problems

I am trying to replace the timing belt on a 2005 pt cruiser without turbo.

Have taken it apart and cannot get the timing belt onto the tension pulley. It seems to be too short. Compared it to the original and they are the same in length and even counted the teeth. Any suggestions as to what could be the problem?
Tension pulley is a T43008

Lightbulb Re: Timing belt installation problems

Are you turning the tensioner to its most rearward position before trying to put the belt on?.....If so you may be routing the belt incorrectly.

Timing Marks as they should look. I suggest to take pictures of yours before you put it back to show and verify their position if you run into problems later. Then you can refer back to these if a questions arise.

All timing marks are correct and belt is routed as per diagram.
Could it be a problem with the tension pulley? Nothing looks out of place.

Losen the bolt on the tensioner use a wrench or ratchet an turn the cam or the crank bolt to pull the belt to the tensioner side and slide the belt over the pulley.
