Default Firewall splitting on 05 Dream Cruiser

Has anybody experienced the firewall splitting at the clutch cylinder? My wifes PT had this happen 2 days ago. Noticed hard shifting and did some investigating. Found a tear at the clutch cylinder. every time you press the clutch, it flexes the firewall. Now the interior is visible from the engine compartment. There is absolutely no rust or corosion, just a clean tear. Vehicle is at dealer after being directed by NHTSA and Chrysler to do so.

I have been active on various PT Forums since 2001, and yours is the first report I've heard of.

i just looked at my car and the way the clutch master is bolted in, i don't think what you describe could possibly happen on mine. there is a second layer of steel on the firewall to prevent that from happening. if it could happen, i likely would have done it. i have been known to kick the clutch and yank it into gear. it is definitely reinforced right there on mine though, i was poking at it with a dental pick. it is hard to see, but here is a pic where you can see the second layer of metal(best pic i can get anyways).

the reinforcement is on the inside, as the outer layer bends outwards like in the bottom picture.

i did find a picture on this forum showing that it is not reinforced right there on the automatic PT's

i have 3 guesses:

1- the piece was missing from the factory, or is absent on later models to save money

2 - the piece was left off after the clutch master cylinder was replaced, perhaps it fell behind the carpet during replacement, or the tech was lazy

3 - your car was born an automatic and later converted to stick.

The clutch cylinder has never been replaced. 145000 miles and no problems until this happened.

Wow....That sux,and it's not an easy area to try welding;Going to need some kind of a custom steel reinforcement plate made for that.
