Default Moding your auto shifter knob

I want to change my stock auto shift knob to something a little more custom looking and was thinking about painting it to match the outside of my Cruiszr.

As the knob is some type of plastic, has anyone on here every painted the shifter before. If so, how well has it held up? What did you have to do to prep it before painting and the method used to apply paint.

Thanks
Cruiszr

If your talking about the 'cue-ball' style,I've been wondering about this myself.......I figure Candyman, would have the best ideas for this mod,and how well it would hold up.

That's the one I talking about. Was lucky enough for someone to give me anouther one to try and mod. Didn't want to screw it up so though I would ask around first.

You can paint it easily. There may be a lot of acids from the hand causing fish eye on your work. Just clean first then sand lightly wit 220, clean again with some acetone. Rattle canning can be done with available colors ( I prefer Rustoleum brand)or you can get the local auto paint supplier to make you up a can with your PT paint color.

I have sanded the knob down with 400 paper but did not think about the acids from hands causing fish eye. Will follow your suggestion.
Have some paint already to match my car that was mixed by auto paint store. Will try and apply with airbrush.

Do you think that it should be clear coated and will it hold up?

I color matched mine using Duplicolor rattle cans and then used the Duplicolor clear over it. I did this a year ago and it is still holding up just fine. You can see it here in this pic.

Once its prepped do 4-5 light coats of color and let it cure for a few days. Then do 4-5 coats of clear and let it cure for at least a week. You want a nice thick coat of clear since its a surface that you will always be touching. I will post pics of mine tonight.

Was planning on applying several coats of plastic adhesive spray paint as the knob is some type of plastic. I have some Dupicolor adhesive spray left over from spraying my modesty engine cover so I figure it can't hurt.

I now have an extra knob thanks to someone on another PT site. I'll be moding the spare and leaving my stock in place until the moded one has had time to cure for a week or so. Might even try and through in a few flames if things go well.
