Default Timing Belt Mileage Or Time - What's Your Experience?

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser (base model).
It only has 55000 miles on it.
The manual says to replace the timing belt at 90000 miles.
I have a little more then half of that mileage.
However the car is soon coming up to it's 8th birthday.
So what do I do about the timing belt?

I would like to hear what your individual experience with the timing belt has been.

Any input is appreciated.

Well generally they say to replace every 100k. If you have been driving on a regular bases. I would think you have a while to save up the funds to do it . If the car sat or sits a lot for extended periods of time I would be more worried about dry rot. They do have a time limit. but many are passed it. But some have broken early.

Thanks for the reply.

My PT gets driven daily, just not a lot of miles.
So I don't think dry rot is an issue.

I realize the timing belt replacement issue is a biggie for the PT, but I get several different answers to my big question I have: at what MILEAGE does the belt need to be replaced by? Even here in these forums the answers are several. Seems like the owner's manuals differ depending on the year of the PT Cruiser. Some people say 90,000, some say 120,000. My manual for my '05 reads 105,000. Who (or what) do we believe? Does the mileage change depending on the year? I am so confused. Thanks for letting me vent!

If the manual says 105k, I'd change it at 100k, especially if you are not the original owner since you don't know how it was driven and maintained prior to your purchase. The manufacturer has a pretty good handle on the service life of the parts, so better safe than sorry.

non interference engine, it snaps, you stop.
Replace it, then carry on.

i agree with busa, but i have free towing from state farm.

for the timing belt on a 2005 non turbo, alldata says

120,000 for normal service
90,000 for severe service

looks like the 105 is splitting the difference.

They have broken at 60,000. the problem with waiting till it breaks is, a tow bill, no chance to shop around for best service or price, and I gotta do it now because I'm walking and not In my plans. No It's better to plan a strategy. Rubber will dry rot so millage may vary. Busa will never see 100k when his belt breaks. Infrequent driving is rubber components worst enemy. If you drive regularly and no long periods of inactivity. You should come closer to to the number than one that sits for weeks at a time. You really can just look at it and say it looks ok and know your safe. Age does play a factor with any belt.

I totally agree, but it is nice to know that a broken belt will not result in expensive noises.
