Default Screech or squeal

My wife's 01 2.0L PT has developed a screech/squeal on startup usually worse on damp days then goes away after a few hundred yards driving.

It is not overheating or losing water, the symptoms I would have expected for a water pump. The serp belt was replaced 18 months ago at around 85k miles and the car has only done another 10k since then. When the belt was changed I did not get the water pump changed. I know.... it should have been done but the car was new to me then, I know better now.

Any other suggestions to start looking for, or could it still be (please no!) the water pump?

Thanks

Tony

p.s. why do we put ourselves through this pain, why not buy a more modern car with better road holding, better turning circle, better fuel consumption, easier to service.

Also could be the belt torque pulley (belt tensioner), they tend to go bad sometimes around 100k miles.

Is this as much of a swine to change as the belt/water pump. I guess it probably is! Doh

One way to check if it's a belt squealing,is to buy a can of 'Belt Dressing'(for a couple of dollars),and spray the belts(one at a time),when the noise stops,if at all, you've found your culprit.....Then try tightening, the belt to the correct tension, and if it still squeals after that,it probably needs to be replaced because of 'glazing'.

Old school method = take a bar of soap, as in bath soap, and when the belt is running, rub it underneath and on top. Allows it to have a little bit if "lubrication" and if it stops squealing, then it's either the belt or the belt tensioner. If it doesn't stop the squealing - next phase as Randy mentioned...lol...

Sorry guys, I need your help again. I removed splash guard in wheel well, the small pencil support and the inner splash guard. All very good, saw my belt at last but here is where I hit the snag. The Haynes manual says to put a socket on the serpentine belt tensioner to relieve the tension allowing this belt to come off first. Where they show this socket to go on there is not a nut.

I then started reading online and several people mention a 3/8" square to put a wrench in to, which I guess must be the fixed end of the tensioner, but I can only just see this and no way can I get a wrench on it. I attach a couple of photos to show the problem.

Obviously I need to be able to do this easily, I am sure I can get the serpentine belt off but without a way of relieving the tension there is no way to replace it.

HELP!

Thanks

Tony

Just get a wrench or adjustable open end wrench on that square end a swing it in the direction that lets you remove the belt. I believe it will be towards the front of the pt.
