Question 2001 PT - Fan Turns on during Warm-up

Hello all,

Reaching out to this forum for help on a strange problem that has me stumped:

Summary: When warming from a cold start, the radiator fan turns on before the temperature gauge reached normal operating temperature. The fan cycles on and off. All other behavior appears to be normal. After warm-up the car runs normally - no overheating or other erratic behavior.

Here are more details:
I recently replaced the thermostat outlet piece (The black plastic piece just above the thermostat that connects to the upper radiator hose) due to a minor leak. The thermostat and the gasket were also replaced. Air has been purged by following the correct procedure. System hold 14-16 PSI pressure. I noticed the problem when I was making sure that the car was warming up properly. Here is the "step by step" from a warm-up cycle. I also tapped into the OBDII to get the coolant temps.

Ambient temperature: 34F
1. Car Startup -
Temp Gauge - Low end of scale
ODBII Interface Reported Coolant Temp: 40F

2. Initial Phase
Temp Gauge - Normal needle movement
OBDII - Normal and smooth increase in temp readings
Outlet of Thermostat: Cold (Just feeling the hose from engine to top of Radiator)

3. Radiator Fan Turn on
Temp Gauge - below normal mid point, about 2/6 of the way (the gauge is marked in 6 segments)
OBDII - 175F
Outlet of Thermostat: Cold

4. Radiator Fan Cycles on and off (30 - 40 sec cycles)
Normal increase in both gauge and OBDII readings

5. Thermostat Opens:
Temp Gauge - normal halfway reading
OBDII - 205F
Outlet of Thermostat -rapid warm-up

6. Normal running, drivability
Temp Gauge - stays on the mid mark - hardly any variation
OBDII - Temps between 188F to 202F (Thermostat is 195F)

Has anyone noticed this behavior? Is this normal? Is there another temp sensor that causes the fan to turn on? Any suggestions or pointers are welcome.

Thanks,
Copernicus.

just a guess: do you have the settings knob set to defrost? if so, the a/c is on and the fan is supposed to run, regardless if the engine is cold or hot.

You might also check the ECT sensor, check the plug, and connection,to make sure it IS plugged in (the mech. may have forgot to),and maybe check the ECT sensor for resistance with a mult-imeter.

Thanks for the responses.

soyomb: Thanks - the flow knob was not set to defrost and the AC was not turned on.
Randyincctx: Thanks - The connector to the ECT (coolant temp sensor) is securely connected.

Any other thoughts?

Coper; Because your temperature is running about right when your temp gage is halfway, I'd guess the temp sensor and thermostat are probably ok. In addition to Soyo's answer about the defrost setting, his answer also applies to the position next to the defrost setting. See owners manual.

Hello:

Randyincctx - please could you tell me the expected resistance I should see?

Pt06, Soyomb - The flow selector is on the "panel" position (the most anti-clockwise position).

Would it be possible for a forum member to replicate the circumstances (i.e. Park car outside (in freezing weather) overnight, start the car in the morning and allow the engine to warm up (without driving off). If the fan turns on BEFORE the temp gauge reaches the mid-way point, it would be consistent with what I may am observing. (The car is a 2001 PT limited with 2.4L non-turbo)

I remember reading a while back (offcourse, I cannot find it now) that if the ECU does not see a high enough temp within a certain time, it turns on the fan just to be sure that it's not a bad temp sensor. This condition gets reset when the ECU (eventually) sees the normal operating temp. This could cause what I am observing, but would be nice to verify on another PT. Also, has anyone read/seen anything similar?

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions.

LOL- what a shitty request. it's 17 degrees out here, I hate the cold, and i just stood outside like an idiot with my fingertips on the fan blades for a good 20 minutes before the fan came on. after the fan came on i looked at the temperature gauge and it was just about 1/16" below half way. merry christmas.
