Default Headlights Went OFF while Driving at night.

It's my wife's Cruiser.
2004 Touring Edition.
With Fog Lights.

Just driving along, down a dark two lane through the woods, and suddenly, the Headlights went OFF!
Reminded me of the hood flying up on my old Ford truck back in the 70's...

All other lights still work. Pkg lights, turn signals, flashers, brake, dash, interior, all functional.
No headlights or fog lights. Both do not come on.

When the lights quit, I had the Rear Window Defroster ON, if that means anything.

Checked ALL fuses in the interior panel. None of them were obliviously blown.
I turned every non essential powered item off (radio, heater, Rear Window Defroster....). Still no headlights.

So I put the flashers on and nursed it on home (4 miles).

So,
Any ideas as to what went wrong?
After searching other threads on similar issues, the switch is the obvious culprit. Except, the lights quit as I was rolling down the road. Seems weird. Wouldn't the switch quit as it is being operated, instead of when it's in a static position? Unless it melted internally....

Thanks in advance for Any insight y'all might have.

Jeff and Lizzy

Lightbulb Re: Headlights Went OFF while Driving at night.

Did you pull and check the relay?(located underneath the interior fuse panel); Also check #21 fuse (Yellow 20 Amp) in the PDC (Power Distribution Center) located in the engine compartment......Other than those, you still could be looking at a problem with the MFS (Multi-function Switch).

Thanks Randy.
I just went and looks. Gently pulled on the relay and it's cover came rite off. Like is already had issues. Pulled it all the way out and examined it closely. No burnt spots. Spring functional. Resister in tact. Looked good.
Put it back in, still no lights.

And it just started Snowing.

This might help also....Pull the fuse panel, and look at the wiring from the backside....Notice the tan/black wire at the center contact pin of the headlight relay looks 'burnt'.(sign of overheating)

The blue arrow points to fuse #8 wires.

Fuze #21 does not exist. For that fuse, our manual says "Fog Lights (Build-Up Export Only)". There is no fuse in that slot.

As for pulling the fuse block out, I think I'll turn that over to our mechanic. That is a little above my pay grade.

And now the snow is Really coming down. Half inch on everything so far....

Here are all of the major circuit elements.
Underhood PDC fuse #1 (25a)- but likely OK because it also protects parking lights.
Underhood PDC fuse #16/17 (15a) protects high beams

Dash fuse block fuse #1 (25 a) protects all headlights
Dash fuse block fuse #2 (15 a) protects parking lights
Dash fuse block fuse #19 (10 a) protects right low beam
Dash fuse block fuse #20 (10 a) protects left low beam

The big connectors below (behind) the code reader connector are known to cause problems as is the MFS (headlight switch). Here is a recent tread about a headlight problem.

Dream Cruiser problems......:help:

I noticed in the photo there is a '15 A' fuse, instead of a '25 A' fuse????....I wonder if that has something to do with the issue?

I don't know. Seems like there might have been issues in the past.
We've only had this Cruiser a few weeks. Our previous one, a 2001, was totaled in an accident.

The cover for the under the hood fuse box was loose. That and the relay cover are making me think there might be an Existing Condition.

And the snow cover is approaching 4 inches now....

From the thread your link led me too:

"you might also look at the big connector behind the fuse box. check it for melting, and also for incorrect repairs. look here first, as it's pretty easy/obvious if you see melted stuff

it is a big connector mounted to a metal clip right next to the OBD port under the dash. these melt and are a known problem. mine was incorrectly repaired and the repair failed."

It's too snowy for me to go check that now, but at the time, I did not Smell any thing. Usually when a wire melts like that, you can smell it.

My PDC cover/lid is loose also, for some reason the plastic latch won't catch,so it stays loose........I'll eventually fix that, when I get around to it.
