Default 15.5 gallons in a 15 gallon tank?

I was really low when I filled up my 05 GT recently. I was surprised to see I had put 15.5 gallons in when the auto shutoff hit. No gas spilled out, so I assume it didn't fill the filler neck and it was a pump at a station that I typically use.

How can that be? I am dealing with a 15 gallon tank, right?

Why blame the pt?

Perhaps the gas station is ripping you off

Busa may be right. They've caught a couple stations here in my county (after a few people complained) that something was amiss between what you paid for and what you received.

In CA weights and measures is done on a regular inspection bases. I often see new updated stickers on the pumps. It is also a misdemeanors and violators may be subject to civil or criminal charges.

These were taken 10 minutes ago at Safeway.

Finding Fuel station in the US cheating IMO is becoming a thing of the past?

As for the GRU getting 15.5 that would not be unuasal. For one thing the fuel tanks capacity holds more then 15 gallon on a level plane and if you "burb" the tank as you are filling it. Next the fuel system topped off to the filler next can hold about 16+ gallons.

Now please some of you eye lifters don't me get out the spare PT fuel tank and do precises CCing to get the exact amount to prove my response.

only thing i would question about 15.5 is why you would do that to your poor car. you ever change a fuel pump? it isn't too bad but it isn't exactly fun either.

this lady.. be happy you aren't this lady:

Good find Rob. If I had to guess this is pretty close to what I estimate is the maximum fuel capacity under ideal pumping situations and maybe including the fill hose from the tank to the fuel cap?

The vent tube on the PT is very small and most fuel pump nozzles in the USA are highly pressure sensitive. So it takes some work to add more fuel in the tank when it is vapor pressured and even more so in the warmer seasons.

Every gas pump should have a state or federal inspection sticker that tells you the last date of inspection/calibration.
If something doesn't seem correct, you can anonymously call in a complaint.

I know the Neon would hold more than tank's capacity- It was filling the filler tube.

I remember reading of a sophisticated scam; tests were done on 5 gallons- Someone noticed this and made programs to start cheating after 5 gallons!
Sophisticated and clever!

But overall I'd guess it was just as has been posted above, you can fill the system above stated capacity!
