Default Rad fan P0481

Looks like I will be swapping in a new fan.

last friday was driving home, at an intersection I smelled something burnt, wasnt sure if it was the guy in front of me or not.

Anyhow, going to work this morning, I get the check engine, check the code and it is P0481, high speed on the fan.

I ordered a fan and will swap it out Sat, guess I wont run the Defrost.

Wish you would had said something before ordering. I have a brand new Chrysler fan up in the attic given to me by my mechanic when he sold his daughter's PT and willing to almost give it away for a few bucks above the shipping price.

Never mind, just saw your signature and looks like all your PT's are Turbo except for one, and it's a second generation, so it's probably a Turbo fan you need.....different fan.

Yea, not sure but think the second generation fan and housing is different. Hope you ordered a good replacement fan from Rock Auto or got one with a lifetime
replacement. Dorman seems to be the one most people go for.

I ordered a Mopar fan, hope the replacements are better than the orignals LOL.

I did look at Rock and AAP, funnything is they show a bunch of different connectors depending on the manufacturer, they had Dorman, TYC, 4seasons etc and I didnt want to order one and wait and get the incorrect connector so called local dealership, parts guy cuts me deals 15% over cost.

Will pop it in Saturday.

Crewzin; Yes, the 2006 radiator fan assemblies ARE different. The plug-in connectors have 4 prongs and the 'fan module' [aka relays] are mounted to it.

VNT; After you change yours, would you tell me if you have dual 4 prong connectors or just 1 connector? Thanx

Yes the fan I bought was Mopar #5179470AA for 06 PT 2.4 base, works for the auto and sitck, I will add car has 34,800 miles.

The connectors is a single connector with 4 prongs that connects to body harness to fan module. The module has the two relay mounted on the upper corner.

What did I learn.

First I smelled burnt odor periodically, also the engine would lug sometimes when stoped at intersection, I also had to tension the altenator belt.

So what i think happens if the fan windings start to draw more current, when running the defrost(it is winter here, havent driven the car in summer but would apply whan AC turned on), and last Friday I think the fan motor crapped out, I could smell it. On monday into work turn defrost on, the Check Engine light comes on and gives code 0481, high speed relay on the fan.

Replaced the module, and also had to replace the 50A Catridge fuse(made by LittleFuse, red one in cavity 15, 50A feed to fan from battery. Part # is 6102078AA

So the failed fan will take out that fuse.

Oh per the fan itself, the mopar unit comes with new bolts and blind female hardware the bolts thead into, I used some of the bolts but left the original hardware on the rad. Note, the fan has 6 bolts, two on top, two on botom and 1 on each side, I had to dig into my stash of bolt and installed a couple which were about 1/4" longer to get them to engage on the side ones, diddled around for about 1/2 hour trying to get the orignals to thread in, no go.

Rest of repair mimics the one here, drain some coolant, remove the 4 bolts on grill, remove grill, remove the 6 bolts on center support(note they ae differnet legths keep in order) remove the single bolt on the vertical support, lay center support on blanket on bumper, remove upper rad hose on radaitor connection, pull the 6 bolts on fan assembly and the body harness connector from below.

Remove assembly, have beer, the reinstall in reverse order. lastly replace 50A fuse in the TIPM. Test drive, come back have another beer, reward oneself for job well done and curse the old fan and Dumbler Benz for forcing Chrysler to run cheap parts!

Lastly, if you run into this during the summer, dont keep driving the car, you have no power to the fan, no low speed, no high speed. You will overheat the engine, cook the head gasket and then come to the forum asking what to do, Bite the bullet when the check engine comes on and get it fixed! If you dont it will be warped head and head gasket time!

I just purchased a 2002 PT limited. The previous owner has described the over heating problem it has and all the parts his mechanic has thrown at it. and it points to the fan ( it was never looked at) This is where I going to focus my attention. What would you let the fan you have go for over what it takes to ship, Will it fit a 2002? Thanks

You should send him a PM. He has a lot of threads to keep up with. He's not as scary as he seems.
