Default Weep Hole on Muffler? What's That All About?

Well, I just bought a muffler today that I did not need.

It's half price day at a local salvage yard that has a very clean 2004 Touring PT. Most parts on it look new. So I grabbed the muffler and hangers for about $13.

I had noticed on my own original muffler that there seemed to be a small pin hole at the bottom and some black soot has been coming through. I thought this meant my muffler was about to the rust through from the inside. So I snagged this new-looking muffler to replace it with.

Well, to my surprise when I compared the two, the newish replacement muffler also had the SAME HOLE. On closer inspection I realized that this was not a rust hole. It was a factory "weep" hole of some type that is obviously supposed to be there. How strange is that?

Does anybody know why 1st Gen PT's have this weep hole on the muffler where soot comes out? Why in the world does it need that hole?

That makes sense. And I can image such a weep hole might even lengthen the life of a muffler. But I've never noticed it on any other car I've owned.

Its like owning a PT how many did you notice before you owned one....?

I see PTs and MINIs in my sleep now!

Take a look the next time you go to a shopping center parking lot at the mufflers.

if the muffler does not have a drainage hole, the moisture can freeze and over time it can actually plug with ice.

this happened to my friends father. the local muffler shop installed it upside down so it could not drain. when he went to start his van, the ice plugged exhaust caused it to backfire which in turn ruined his carburetor and caused a sizeable repair bill for the muffler shop.

another benefit to the drain hole is to prevent rust. exaust has low percentage of sulpher dioxide in it and turns to acid in moisture. if it does not drain it will eat it from the inside out.

for those two reasons i drill drain holes in aftermarket mufflers without them.

i learned about the rust causing acid from a friend with a rusty truck bumper. it started rusting at 16k miles, only by the exhaust pipe.

"the bumpers are made in Veedersburg Indiana , and they changed the chroming process to meet epa standards ,less chromium =more pitting ( just to let you know the following bumpers are made there ( toyota pickups , Ford F series, Nissan trucks , and Gm trucks ) so they are all going to have problems also try a down turned tip if your exaust exits right there as the exaust has low percentage of sulpher dioxide in it and turns to acid in moisture . the shop across the street from my house does chroming for industrial crankshafts ( no cars, sorry... I asked ) and they are having chroming issues as they use the same process for same reason ... "

interesting, eh?
