Default Rattling Shock

I put new shocks on the back of my PT. After awhile there was a hell of a rattle back there. I took the shock off and the rattle was gone. I took that shock back & got another one and the rattle stopped. Now the same rattle is on the other side. Is there a torque value to tighten the shock bolts? I thought I had downloaded the PT shop manual or had bought it on a CD or something but I can't find it anywhere .... I tightened them about as tight as I can get them without putting an impact gun to it ... Thanks ...

Torque specs for the rear shocks are: Upper Mounting Bolts = 73 ft/lbs & Lower Mounting Bolts = 65 ft/lbs(2002-up) 50 ft/lbs(2001 models ONLY!).

What shocks were they?

The securing bolt on this type of tube dampener mainly only prevents the loop bushing from sliding off the shock (dampener)stud on the top. On the lower end it at least needs to be snug enough not to allow movement of the lower tube in its mounting area and then properly torqued. If you are hearing strange sounds or the suspension action is very different in a uneasy manor you should carefully examine all other points of the rear suspension. If you raised the car and lowered the axle as you should have during installation you have moved your rear suspension in ways that it has not done in years. So chances are other things may be of concern that you unknowingly uncovered?

I recommend anti- seize on the studs and thread unless they are polyurethane bushings in which no petroleum products should be used for lubrication.

Thanks Nitro. They are Gabriel shocks. I just put the hardware back on there that came off of it. I took the shock off & drove it around & no rattle at all. I didn't torque the bolt, just tightened it. I will though since I know the torque value. Thanks again....

ej; I too had noise problems with the gabriel shocks. Noisy within 6 months and one of them leaked within a year.

The torque numbers from Randy are for dry threads. Drop 10 % for oiled threads.
