Default darn it trunk!

So, when I unlock my 05 PT, the trunk automatically opens..
I can't figure out why?
The button doesn't work on the back..
The only thing that remedies the situation is that there's a procedure..

1. Unlock the doors - trunk opens
2. Run to the back, apply weight to trunk, and truck seals
3. Run to the door, push the lock button in the lock position
4. Trunk problem is remedied temporarily.

If I don't do that, it just opens mid-drive.
:/
Anyone else go through this pain in the butt?
What can/should I do?

This seems to be a "thing" with the 05 PT. If you search the forum there are several threads.

From what I've read, the best solution is to install a whole back hatch off of a earlier model PT with the mechanical latch. But there's less severe options.

Start here:

Rear hatch unlocks when I get in and start engine.

Then after taking all that in, you can get more by going to the advance search page, put in the word "hatch" and set it to only search thread titles. That will give you many threads on this subject.

So I have to replace the whole handle, hatch, or do a bypass..
what if I pull the fuse?

Since the touch pad is electric, you wouldn't be able to open the hatch 'till you put the fuse in.

Seriously, there's got to be literally tens of thousands of black salvage 1st Gen PT's. I really would find an earlier hatch and just replace the thing. I figure it would cost about $100. And someone could easily spend that trying to fiddle with the electric latch. The older mechanical hatches work very well.

I have the same problem with my '05. Pain in the neck!

I get in, lock the doors and then start the engine and that seems to solve my problem but I do have to use the key to unlock the hatch.

Is you touch pad peeling up? Mine is.
