Smile Tranmission Prob. for original owner 2001 PT

I am in SC, retired law enforcement, but grew up in central Florida. I am the original owner of 2001 PT (non-turbo). Maintenance has always been up to date. I just rolled 47,000 and noticed some jerking in transmission when coming to a stop. Dropped the transmission pan and noticed some gritty like sand-sized pieces of Permatex-like rubbery pieces. Fluid is bright pink and clean.

Was planning on changing transmission filter and fluid and keeping my fingers crossed. Could this be a sign of transmission going bad???? This is an AUTOMATIC transmission.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Changing the fluid and filter and perhaps you should also add some conditioner like Amzoil or Red Line. The jerking may only be solenoids or servo sticking from going so long between servicing the fluid? The particles you are describing without a picture are not usual parts wear in a transmission. Generally, copper or aluminum and the color of the fluid is indication of possible concerns.

Thanks so much for responding. Service has been at 25,000 miles.
I am not familiar with solenoids or servo. Could you tell me more about that?

Thanks again for your help.

They control the shifting perimeters. If they become damaged from fluid heating or simply from not regularly servicing the fluid they can effect the shifting as you described.

If you continue to get the bad shifting quality after this last fluid service you might consider going to a shop that can check for TCM codes.

When you dropped the pan you didn't happen to find my old Timex watch in there did you?

Nope, didn't find your Timex. I had one, too. It was the best watch I ever had.
If I need to replace the solenoids or servo, does the transmission have to come out?

Again, thanks for responding back.
