Default Starter wiring

I am new here and somewhat new to PT's. I had my starter out for a rebuild and ended up just going with a re-man. The solenoid has a different hook up but looks basicly the same. My question is where do the two heavy wires going to the starter attach? I put the green on the bottom bolt and the red on the top one and it started ok but it seemed something was smoking. I could not remember if bot big wires were together but was petty sure they were seperate like my neon. Feel pretty silly should have made a note or something.

Hello
Welcome to forum. We are here to help as we can. It helps us a lot to know what year cruiser and is it turbo (sometimes makes a difference in wiring)?

That said, look at this diagram. It does have wire color and gauge and connections.

They sold you the wrong starter for your year PT Cruiser.
You didn't say what year your PT Cruiser is,but I can tell you either have a 2001-2002,and ended up with a 2003-2010 starter(w/blade style connector),or you have a 2003-2010,and ended up with a 2001-2002 starter(w/plug style connector).
