Default Noises From Back of Car

I just purchased a 2002 PT Cruiser and I am wondering about two noises from the back of the car. One is a very soft and constant high pitched whine, kind of like what a water pump with no water would produce.

The other is fairly loud rattle that I hear only when the car is idling at a stop. There is nothing in the rear storage compartments so I know it's nothing like that. I'm thinking it might be something that is lose on the undercarriage.

Any thoughts as to what might be causing these two noises?

Thanks in advance for any ideas that you may share!

Regarding the rattle:

Check your spare tire mount tightness. Sometimes the plastic lens over the CHMSL (center high mount stop light) loosens and rattles under the upper interior hatch trim piece.

I had an annoying squeak/rattle from the back of my PT when I first bought it. It turned out to be a tail light lens wasn't seated correctly.

Rattle can also be the exhaust, loose license plate, and don't forget the jack.
As far as the whine the only motor moving part in back without the car moving is the fuel pump.
Good luck.

I've also read of others who discovered the fuel hose was loose and rattling.

My hunch is motor mount and the sound is from front of car.

Thanks for the reply. I can probably rule out the motor mounts. Two of them were broken when I bought the car and have been replaced, and the mechanic checked the others to make sure they were fine. I also had the timing belt and pulley replaced, the water pump was replaced, and the rear shocks were also replaced, along with fixing a few leaks and general tune up work. It actually runs and idles really smoothly now.

I always seem to get an annoying whine from the passenger side whenever the mother-in-law gets in
eightball likes this.
