Default Blue Betty broke down on the way to work today ...

My 03 cruiser is named Blue Betty because my kids called her that when they were two, and the name stuck :-)

Was driving to work today, car lost power, sputtered a little, then the engine died. I coasted to the side of the road (what little there was) and thought, oh snap I hope the timing belt didn't break. I know it needs replaced, was actually in the process of finding someone to replace it (11 years old, 105k on the clock) Decided to try and crank it, it started for about half a second, sputtered and died. Cranked it again, again sputtered and died. So I think I'm safe, that rules to timing belt out. While pondering what to do, I did my basic checks. Made sure the plug wires were firmly attached, checked all fluids, etc. Then I realized (after sitting with the flashers on for 45 minutes) that I didn't hear the whine of the fuel pump. When starting my car, I always listen for the fuel pump to spin up and stop before cranking. Just a habit.

So I checked the fuse - fuse was good. Tried it again, still no luck, so I'm betting my fuel pump went on me. Car is being towed to Pep Boys (they had a 30$ towing deal if they fix it and I don't have AAA) so we'll have to see. Shall we place bets? Who says its time timing belt? Anyone for a fuel pump? or how about a relay or electrical problem? Any bets? I'm betting the fuel pump. After my few crank/sputter attempts, it wouldn't even sputter, so I'm guessing it was just barely starting on the tiny amount of fuel vapor left in the lines.

I really didn't want to go to work today anyway :-P

You should have tried the "key trick" and that might have given you an idea of what went wrong. At least if you know, you could tell the "Boys" where to start looking because you don't want them to just throw parts at it that will cost you time and money.

How to retrieve fault codes.

Yeah - tried the key on/off - it just said "done" so guessing it doesn't have any codes.

OK, not everything has a code associated with it so please let us know what the "Boys" found out.

Invest in a good code scanner, the key dance isn't the smartest thing out there and doesn't catch everything.

i would say fuel pump or fuel filter. mine is starting to jerk and "sputter", without a sputtering noise, under light acceleration to heavey acceleration. trying to work that out.

Just heard back from my step-brother-in-law (if that is even a real thing) and the verdict is..... <drum roll>

Fuel pump!

He said to go ahead and buy the timing belt while he was in there because he would do it for 300$

So glad my timing belt didn't break!

That sounds like a good idea. You might as well get that timing belt done if your '03 is anywhere near the 100,000 mile mark. .
