Default Is It True

If you touch bulbs ( in this case tail/brake ) it creates the opportunity for the oil on your fingers to transfer and overheat said bulb ?
.. Seems this may be the case .... just didnt see the warnings on the packaging.
..
ps : posting this for a friend/wife/neighbor

I do not think I have ever seen this proven or not. I think the information or caution has been around since aftermarket high intensity lights around the late 70's?

I personally always wash my hands or wear gloves when handling bulbs just because? I never questioned the information originally but now come to think of it I do not think I have ever seen or read empirical information with the answer?

I therefore have NO COMMENT !

Certain types of bulbs this is true. Maglite bulbs are a good example. Had to replace bulbs almost as much as the batteries until a coworker schooled me on not touching them. But led bulbs are taking the place of these. Halogen or any bulbs that put off a lot of heat, will have it's service life significantly diminished by touching with bare hands. Common knowledge in the copier industry. Again being phased out with the fluorescent style bulbs in the digital copiers. There you go Lynn. Now you can tell them your not a know it all.

But you are not stating empirical data only information from manufactures instructing warnings and cautions?

NOT EMPIRICAL DATA!
So I can't use it or I would be contributing to the continued chain of "they said" so it must be so information that is so against my principles.

Just because there are warnings not to touch a bulb is not fact that it may shorten its life?

If I used logic than I would have to say it does not matter to touch a bulb. The oil would burn off and away or turn to carbon and adhere to the glass.
Now that carbon itself would actually act as a heat barrier but reduce heat radiation? So I suppose if you completely cover a bulb with skin oil and it carbonizes it may raise the internal temperature and burn the filament or internal parts?

NOPE I am not convinced and I think "MYTH busters" needs to do a show on this?

Or better yet QDon always comes up with answers to questionable questions?

Once again a lot of speculation, theories, with no testing. The response about the NAVY viewfinder is better but still only second hand and can be argued away with glass facts.

I once rode home from work with my fog lights on in my 70 Nova 350. Got out the hose and washed the car and when the cold water from the hose hit the glass covering the fog lights they both cracked. Does that count.

Really ?? You are better than this normally? How is a co-worker say not to do something Empirical Data only an observation or passed information form another unconfirmed source?

I would rather see something a little better than what someone said? I can't even find at what temperature skin oil burns off at. That in itself would help better to talk about the merits of this thread?

Makes me want to go out and rub my oily nose on a 194 and another completely clean and dry with alcohol. Place them in the same powered sockets panel and power them constant to see which burns out first?

But than I would need to repeat the test 2 more times to be conclusive.

NAW I ain't that bored.

Guess we should just not touch the bulbs without protection.
