Angry New gas strut will not compress! Help!

Hi everyone, I am in need of help with this. I have an '04 GT, and a while back my tailgate/hatch would pop within the first 3-4" of opening. Well, it eventually quit opening due to a rusted/seized strut. Bought a new strut, and went to put it on today to only find out that it will not compress enough to even get it to bolt on. Even with putting all of my weight on it, it still won't compress.

Has anyone ever had this issue? How did you get it to work?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time.

I don't remember if mine were that tough when I did mine. Here's what might help. Use a broom stick or board to hold the hatch open all the way. Now swap out the upper with the new strut. After removing the lower end of the old one, have someone hold it open so you can mount the lower end.

If that doesn't work, take the new strut back and exchange it for another. Oh, and it would be wise to replace both struts. Otherwise the one new strut will get old rather quickly.

Good luck

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. If that doesn't work I guess I'll go get a new one, and try that.

Thanks again for your help!
