Default Timing Belt Question

Alright , I dropped my cruiser off at the shop Fri Eve, for the 113K mile Timing Belt , Water Pump kit replacment . Stopped in after work just to have a look at the old parts and evidently the Belt had been replaced before but NOT the pump , tentioner OR Idler ??? which makes no sense to me at all .. also the mounts looked like they had also been replaced at some point because all 3 looked fine, no cracks in the rubber or anything .. My question is the belt that came off looked perfect on the "tooth side" not worn or showing any signs of cracking when its bent , BUT the top smooth side was very glossy looking with just a hint of the R/R tie pattern showing thru, any one have any idea why the top of the belt would be Glossy like that ???? just trying to get a handle on the Characteristics of these cruisers as i go through it .. thanks in Advance , Mike

Although your description is good a picture would be better to see what you are seeing.

Well, if idler pulley and tensioner were not replaced, they may not have been rotating as freely as they should, and they ride on the smooth side of the belt

Belt is more than Likely older than you think. Sounds like one I replaced with 100k. Dose yours have the Chrysler logo?

When mine was replaced at 99,000 miles, it looked like new, as did the other belts. I had a good friend do the work. He was obviously going to change the timing belt, but said the other belts didn't need it, they had been changed before. I told him to replace them. I have had the car since it had 18,000 miles on it and they had never been changed. I was amazed at how good everything looked.

Looks are deceiving, belt materials are much better now and are less prone to cracking. My hoses still looked good a little before 99,000 miles, but I changed them too.

so "squeak" you are "squeak" saying "squeak" that either of those rotating parts"squeak" aside from making "squeaking" noise are going to drag slower than the other rotating parts and only cause a shiny belt surface?"squeak squeak squeak"?

Mine still had gates and Chrysler on it. Gates made the Chrysler belt.

It is absolutely normal to have that side of any poly belt on an engine to be shiny.
Often times when we(mechanics) go to replace a belt we try to read the part number on the belt to order the same one and more often than not they are shiny and/or the belt information is completely or partially wiped (shiny) off!
