Default rough idle on startup

I was adding coolant to my wife's cruiser this morning. While under the hood I reseated the air filter box that was floating loose after I replaced the battery a few weeks back.

I just started the car and it revved up high upon start and then settled down to about 1500rpm idling really rough with an up and down idle.

Sounds like I may have knocked something loose (sensor?) while under the hood. It was running fine when I started the car up to pull it out of the garage.

Any ideas where to look?
It's a 2001 PT Cruiser Limited with the standard 2.4 engine.

Sounds like you pulled loose one of the vacuum lines. Look all over the engine, air filter system and at the lines from/to the brake booster to see if you can find a line that's become unattached.

I suspect you may be right about the brake booster. I'm not familiar with the brake booster, but I looked in the area around the brake fluid reservoir and didn't see any loose vacuum lines. Are there any pictures of the brake booster and the lines I can look at for reference?

I started up the car and it was idling high (around 2 grand). Putting the car in gear I noticed the car wanting to move even with my foot on the brake pedal. Granted the engine was idling higher than normal, so that would add to it, but I don't think the brake pedal felt like had the power assist it should have. (I could be imagining things too. )

Bake booster is back toward firewall, a "can" about 9-10" in diameter, about 3-4 inches deep.

If your brake hose was off you would have no brake assist. The brake pedal would feel very hard.

I would also suspect the PCV hose if any hose was dislodged or broken?

Thanks for the picture, I'll take a look.

Where is the PCV hose?

Off valve cover - valve cover has the oil cap - other end goes to intake.

Found the disconnected vacuum line once I pulled the plastic cover off the top of the engine. Looks like one of the lines that runs back along the firewall towards the brake booster. Clipped off some excess and it fits nice and snug now.

Thanks guys!
