Default 2002 PT Cruiser clutch will not disengage

I have a 2002 PT Cruiser, manual transmission, has about 90,000 miles on it, in good condition.

Anyway, for the past few months I noticed the clutch pedal was getting softer and softer and it felt like the clutch was always engaged while driving (RPM's would shoot up higher then normal upon acceleration.)

Recently while driving, everytime I would try to take off from a complete stop, the RPM's would shoot up really high and the car wouldnt move, eventually after a long time of revving, the car would finally take off, but it would only creep really slow.

it got so bad, I am no longer able to drive the car, I am actually able to turn the car on, put the car into gear and take my foot completely off the clutch without popping it, it wont move, jerk, nothing.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? Clutch cylinder is my only guess.

your clutch is disengaged. what you describe is it won't engage.

you are describing a worn out clutch. it seems you noticed it when it was starting to wear, drove it like that, and now it's shot. the day you notice a clutch slip is the day you should start planning to replace it. on my 2002 i used a $162 LUK clutch off rock auto.

I have changed quite a few clutches but never changed a clutch in a FWD vehicle, from what I have read it is alot more difficult to do in a FWD than it is in a RWD.

Did you change your clutch yourself?

yes. it is the same as a RWD car with these differences

1- you need to remove both axles

2- this car has a flexplate like an automatic that the flywheel bolts to.

3- the flywheel/clutch assembly come out with the transmission. they don't stay on the engine. if you try it like this, the trans wont fit out(or in)

it really isn't a big deal. here's a thread about when i did mine. i decided to change more parts while i was at it. i killed it.
