Default Cruise Control

02 PT Limited.

The cruise doesn't work. The cruise light on the dash comes on when I push the button but the cruise doesn't engage. I checked the cable and it's in tact so I changed the servo. Still no love.

I scanned the codes and it has one that said "vehicle speed sensor". I forget the exact number for the code but it wasn't a wheel speed sensor code. It specifically said Vehicle speed sensor. I know there are two speed sensors on the trans, one for input and one for output. I'm assuming the code is for the output side.

It would make sense for the cruise to not work if the vehicle speed sensor wasn't reading right.

Is that a common failure on these things? Or do they just get dirty?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Wayne

Vacuum line to what? The servo? It's good. There was full vacuum to the old servo.

I guess I should have mentioned that I checked that when I checked the cable.

First I checked the cable then I pulled the vacuum hose off the old servo and, even though the car had been sitting for two days a bunch of air rushed into the servo. No leaks on the vacuum line.

Question, what does the vehicle speed sensor do?
AND, if it's bad does the speedometer still work?
If so, How?

I'm reading where poeple have fixed their non working cruise control by replacing the vehicle speed sensor but non have said whether or not the speedometer was working at the time.

The VSS gives the signal for the speedo and also the cruise. The output sensor drives the speedo but I am not sure if it is the output sensor that the cruise uses or the input. In any event, the code is there so there is a fault. Have you checked the connections?

I live close enough to a junk yard where these parts are plentiful and almost free so I would simply just replace them to see if it worked. As well, they only cost around $10-15 each, brand new, so its not a huge investment to replace both if necessary.

Check all of the connections on the sensors and cruise. If that fails then try replacing one sensor first to see if there is a change.
