My 2002 PT has 86,000 miles on the original timing belt and water pump. is running fine. When should I replace them ? Also are there certain water pumps to avoid ??

We've seen the belt go before 100k but most go beyond that. If we're asked, 100k is a good time to start looking around for a new belt, water pump and tensioner. A good way to save a few bucks is to buy the whole "kit" which comes with everything you need. A good place to start looking is at RockAuto Parts Catalog

Age is a factor, too, and high heat areas (Nevada, etc) also shorten the life.
It depends on how lucky you feel.
