Smile What a far

(2007 base PT)
Monday as I got ready to leave in the morning I noticed my tire was low. I had a plug put in it the other day so I wasn't surprised. So I break out the pump and start airing it up, failing to start the car.
After it is aired up I try to start it and get a click as a response followed by an expletive from me. Grabbing the jumpbox thinking "no biggie" only to find it deader than I thought my car was. Into the old yard truck hoping it had juice, it did. Jumped the car off we go.
10 miles down the road the dash lights start flickering and the car is struggling. I limp it to the side of the road and it dies. I pop the hood and stared at the engine quizzically until our roommates came to rescue my wife and take her to work.
Many google searches.and post and I have the battery out and inspecting cables. Since I lacked a tool kit I did this all with a leatherman multitool.
The rescuers return and we try to jump it again.... nothing but a click.
The battery is showing 12v on a meter.
I crank on every cable clamp as hard as I feel won't break them. Turn the the key and vroom, it starts. 14.1V showing on the obdII at the computer.
It drives the rest of the day fine.
Today I go out and hit the unlock button and the headlight come on really dim. Insert another colorful expletive.
I wiggle and tighten cables and test the battery and was rewarded with a engine start.
I dripped my son off at school and immediately head to O'Reillys. The ground cable looked a little iffy so I bought 2 (one to the starter bolt and the other to the body bolt) and replaced them in the parking lot. Tried to start and, click. Expletives.
Going over everything again I (think I) found the problem. The post clamp which looked new, and was replaced by the P.O. was cracked AND had enamel red paint under the connections. I bought a new one, since I was still in the parking lot, and replaced it, making sure it had good contacts (aka I scrapped the damned paint off it).
The car fired right up and, so far, seems to be running fine for now.
Moral of the story; check your battery cables before dumping money into batteries or alternators.

Don't forget to check that tire.

So true. I get a new tire Friday, and I also noticed my shift linkage is missing a retaining clip. Tomorrow I hit up the hardware store.
