Unhappy Is this mechanic an idiot?... or am I missing something.

Forgive me if I don't know what I am talking about... I'm not good with cars.. I'm just repeating what I have been told.

So,
I need to replace my hub and wheel bearing... was told by a mechanic, and I can tell how bad it is from all the noise.

I bought a new bearing and a new hub and dropped it off at a shop for them to press them... well I get a call a few hours later asking me for the other parts?... ... I asked him what he meant, and he couldn't explain himself well enough and I felt like an idiot so I decided to hang up and try you guys.

Are they talking about the steering knuckle? Does this piece need to come off as well?! From what I was aware... I just needed to bring the hub and bearing.

Assuming we are talking about the front wheel bearing, usually you just reuse the old hub and the only part that is replaced is the bearing. Since the bearing and hub are pressed into the steering knuckle, the whole thing comes off and then the parts are changed.

Unless there is something else broken on the car, the only parts your mechanic needs are the bearing and hub if you supplied one.

Some say it's better if you do both sides at the same time since it's probably only a matter of a short time when the other bearing will go bad. Maybe he was thinking you would bring a new bearing for both sides.

My crystal ball is not working well today so unless you can try to give a little more information like the year and model....... etc?

You said hub and bearing so ya you need to bring the mechanic more parts. There are some great Y tube on the process.

You are forgetting a part.

If the front wheel bearing was bad, often all that needs to be replaced is the wheel bearing. This bearing is pressed into the hub. So the hub itself is usually reusable.

Watch both of the videos at the bottom of my post to see exactly what all must be done. This first video shows most of the required work. But this guy takes the hub to a machine shop to have the bearing replaced so that's not included. However, this second video shows the bearing being replaced in the hub.

As far as the mechanic goes, you really won't be able to tell what he's doing until you watch these videos. Then go ask him exactly what parts he's trying to replace. It's possible that you also need additional parts besides just the bearing. But the mechanic should be able to at least show you what he needs even if he doesn't know what it is called.

Here's the deal. A proper legit mechanic almost always buys the parts himself and then just includes them in the price of the job. That way he or she gets all the parts they need and with the quality they are used to. Usually, it is only "poor boy" mechanics that let the customer buy the parts. So I am assuming that is the type of person you are dealing with. Some of these poor boys are great mechanics but may not be able to express themselves well. That's not always a sign of an idiot. Some of the best mechanics I've ever known could barely talk at all.

So again, my recommendation is to watch these videos and bone up on what needs to be done. Then go see the mechanic in person and let him show you what else he needs. If he already has your PT taken apart, you really don't have too much choice. So just see if what he says makes since and is reasonable. And if it is, get the parts and let him finish the job. And if it is not, call a wrecker and have your PT carried somewhere else to a legit mechanic.

All is well.
Thanks everyone for replying.
I took the steering knuckle off and it will be fixed tomorrow.
Seems like everything is so difficult to repair on these things.
But I do love them!

Actually this is the same procedure for all front wheel drive cars. With the exception of some that are a little bit more complex to get apart than the PT. This is as easy as it gets for front wheel bearing replacement. Make sure front hub is not bent before you do it. I had to go back and replace the hub for this reason.
