Default Rear hatch interchange???

I recently bought a 2008 hatch for my 2001. The old is rusty, the newer one perfect. I bolted on the newer hatch and everything fits well, except the new one will not latch down @ the striker. The are clearly differences between the 2 latch mechanisms. Has anyone come across this and what did you do to fix it? Do I need the 2008 striker also that bolts to the body?

The striker is easy enough to change out. They are held it by two bolts. Changed mine to chrome. You should be able to pick one up pretty easy at a salvage yard. The body panels on either side just pop off to gain access to the latch bolts.

I believe the striker is slightly adjustable also with slots on the striker so maybe you just need to adjust the sticker a bit to make it work with the newer door.

striker is not adjustable. It is held in by 2 torx bolts. I'm hoping someone out here has done this
interchange and can shed some light.

I have a 2006 & took the latch out a few months ago to check wiring, the latch has a small amount of play...not sure about the sticker, I've never looked at it.

In 10 years on the Cruiser forums I've seen a few posts where hatches were changed. I can't tell you what year hatch with what year chassis but I don't recall any latch/striker discussions.

I hope you figure it out and it's something easy/cheap such as an adjustment.

Well I have found out that 2001-2004 hatch is unique to itself, and 2005-2010 is unique to itself.

You can use a 2005-2010 hatch on a 2001 PT Cruiser. You must purchase striker P#4589038AB, or use striker from 2005-2010 PT Cruiser . It is a direct bolt in. The newer hatch has a different inner latch assembly which requires using its mate striker.

I am still trying to figure out the outer handle assembly to see if you can use the 2001 pull handle style with the newer latch set-up that is in the hatch already.

I 2005, they switched the hatch latch mechanism from manual to electric - did not know the striker also changed....

Yes, and if you plug in the 2005+ harness in and try and function the power locks, when you go to lock the car with the key fob, the hatch pops open....uggg, Im trying to figure that out now....
