Default 02 Cruiser Help

Hello need some advice on my 02 cruiser none turbo automatic. While driving home the other day the temperature gauge started creeping up I'll attach a random picture I found with a red box showing how high it went.

When I started driving the temperature went down. Decided to change the Thermostat and gasket. After changing I let the car sit in the driveway for about 30 mins and let the car warm up with the A/C running. It was fine no issues at all. I let it sit another 15 mins and she started creeping up. Once it creeps to a certain spot it will start going down never starts hitting the red.

Let the car sit about a week and tried again. Let her warm up. Drove her around the block for about 5 mins put her in park let her sit warmed up ( Temp in middle) nothing. Sat another 15-20 mins and boom she started creeping again.

The fan is running normally so it seems. Even checked the relay on it swapped it with the horn just to make sure. The only odd thing I noticed was the relay was very hot. Almost untouchable but I was able to remove it and swap it.

At this point I'm assuming its the radiator or the fans.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the book.

PS - Water Pump timing belt etc was done about 5 months ago.

The fan has 2 speeds, sounds like 1 might be out.

New here....and a question

Shut the AC off, and run the engine till the temp guage gets to half way
the low speed should be cycling on and off.

Is the overflow tank at full when hot?

How many miles on the car?

Do you ever need to add coolant?

The temperature begin to drop after rising to the point where the high speed fan kicks in. That system is apparently OK.

There are two relays, one for low speed and one for high.

No relay should be hot as you describe. Too much current is flowing through that low (likely) or high speed circuit.
I suspect that your fan motor is failing; perhaps worn brushes and too much corrosion.

Tried that. Both fans turn on.

Low speed is cycling on and off as normal. Just filled the overflow tank so I could see it. Tanky is not see through anymore. Some will pour out of overflow but better safe than sorry. 108,992

I can agree the relay shouldn't be that hot. I'm also in Florida so that may of played a factor.

Currently running car with A/C off and watching it. Will wait about 15 mins turn the a/c on and watch for another 15.

Idling car might be a waste of time...I let mine idle for 45 min before I bought it, it never over heated...over heated the next day & turned out to be a blown head gasket.

BTW: I'm in Florida also, a lot of users here are.

Just drove it 25 mins in stop and go traffic and stopped to grab some Jimmy Johns. All good. Guess I'll take her to work tomorrow and watch her. Maybe unplugging the pigtail and plugging her back in fixed the issue. OR adding a little more coolant.

Who knows. I'll keep this thread updated.

Thanks!

I would suggest checking for corrosion on the Cooling Fan Relay terminals.

you say tios a non turbo--so the fan is like $89 at rock auto with over 100,000 id just replace the fan I guess its like throwing parts at a problem BUT the fans are not the best and it most likely will need replacing anyway

IF it starts oheating again, pull the pigtail apart and look at the inside of both ends. If you see any signs of burning or heat damage you may have found the problem.
Since the cooling fan/AC cycle a bad connection will cause heat and intermittent working fan motor. Fans (brushes) usually last about 100,000 on most I've seen. My center pin (ground) in the pigtail was heat damaged (loose) causing the fan to be ok sometimes for days the the temp would go up
again.
