I'm not totally sure on this, you would have to ask Nitro...
I do remember someone posting here about there being 2 different starter models on some of the G1 PT's...something about the gear/shaft being longer on one & short on the other.

Is it a rebuilt starter or brand new from the dealer?

Starter is remanufactured Duralast #17849 from Autozone , so i took the "new"starter back out , returned it to the store , had it tested and it tested bad , they swapped it out for ANOTHER starter , {had this one tested before i left the store} tested good , brought it home , installed it , NOW THIS starter will start the car but the starter motor doesnt disengage.. im so pissed off right now im seeing stars what are the odds of TWO starters being bad ??????

In the past i have had nothing but problems with Oreilly shucks Kra.. Identity crisis parts store name brand.

If it were me i would return it, and trust a different brand. Napa has never failed me.

BUMP ! anyone? returned the Duralast to Autozone {tested bad} and went to Napa , bought another starter , had them test it , watched the gears kick out and back in , all good... took it home , installed it , the car started fine 3 times but on the 4th time , just rapid clicks ..... am i missing something ?? no engine codes , all the connections are good , new charged battery....absolutely stumped now .... HELP ! any truth to Lions post about longer or shorter gear shafts?

I know there are different part numbers form the auto to the manual trans model starter. From what I could see the only difference was the size of the housing. I didnt have a manual trans starter to compare too. Have you checked the connections to make sure you didnt miss that ground that goes where the starter bolts to the trans? I work for autozone for and have never seen 2 starters bad but that doesnt mean it couldnt happen. My problem with our tester is that theres nothing to test for resistance against the starter gear. Are you positive the ignition switch isnt sticking? I honestly dont know just throwing ideas out there.

dark outside now but i've checked and rechecked everything i can think of , tomorrow ill replace the battery cables and the ground just to make sure , they're originals,, maybe replace the relay while i'm at it..Just don't get it..I can do MOST repairs on cars but when it comes to electrical problems I might as well be trying to learn Chinese ..
