Default Shifter and Cable Issue

My transmission shift cable recently locked up and the shifter connection broke, so I had to replace the cable and shifter, but not the P on the shifter is not lining up with the park on the transmission, and I've tried just about everything I can think of to get it right. When it locked and snapped the connection to the shifter it was somewhere between N and D, and it seems to be off by that when I put it into gear. Any help is appreciated!

Did you compare both cables to make sure they were the same before putting in the new one?

you need to move the lever at the trans end of the cable to park
(it'll be all the way one way or all the way the other way. if you go to start it and the car moves when you turn the key, you went the wrong way)

and then:

Thank you that worked to get it into Park, now I've got to figure out why it's not staying in the proper positions when I shift out of park, seems like cable isn't properly connected somewhere along the line because once I put it into D, it stays there. That's what I get for having my son (who is unfortunately like his father and willing to take shortcuts when it comes to fixing things) and not being there to supervise. I love my PT Cruiser but it's becoming a headache to me, guess 11 years is enough!
