Default Expensive piece of plastic

Wifes 06 GT gas power seat. Switch to move the seat is below the bolster in the trim piece.

Switch for seat is in trim piece with 3 or so plastic stand offs with metal peices which when the folks assemble the seat they simply push the switch through the opening in the trim piece( which has some tangs that hold it) and then press the trim piece so the metal pieces pop through holes in the frame of the seat.

now of course the bolster on the seat rests above the trim piece. So over time the plastic stand offs fatigue and break, so you have no choice but to buy another replacement at the dealer, and the dealer cost is 94$, picked one up and they had pitty on my and charged me 98$ plus tax.

I think I am going to reinforce the stand offs with some JB weld epoxy and tell the wifey to be more careful with the derrier when she gets in and out of the car, my wallet is cringing from the 98$ part.

Oh had them see how many were in stock, Boston warehouse had 20 of em in stock, so this tells me they expect to sell a few!

Ah, no, the part has 3 stand offs made of plastic, once the foam in the bolster cushion brakes down some, this piece gets stressed, the stand off brake.

As I mentioned, when local mopar has 20 of em instock, means these brake a lot.

A common failure on second gen's. Plastic peace is too tall and is forced to hold the seat bottom as it is pressed down and out. An oversight made on many makes of the late 0's. Clearly an over priced item. Especially sense it is such a problem thing.

This thing just went on mine caused actual switch to break. 46 at dealer for replacement. I have looked at the seat and seemed to have solved the problem by putting a screw through the offending panel just in front of the switch. There's a spring like thing behind the panel and I have attached a U clip to this the screw them fastens in to the U clip. This gives additional support at the top of the panel and stops the supports breaking.
If you put a black plastic screw cap over the screw head it actually looks very neat.

There was a post on this forum which I cannot find, but you do not need to buy a new one, you can fix it by putting it in place and drill and screw through to the metal chassis of ther seat, at the back end you put two screws through this and the plastic it goes behind, did it on my daughters PT and it is still OK.

Someone on this forum may have the link to the previous post.

A great example of the consumer being gouged by Chrysler for bad engineering. They did the same thing back in the Early 80s when the outside door handles of many of their cars and pickups were breaking due to penny ante cost cutting engineering. Wg
Hen it happened to my Reliant K I went to the dealer and found the handles were priced at twice plus the price of similar non problem handles. I put my drivers door broken handle on the right rear door and good rear door handle on the drivers door. Within six months I had to swap the other rear door handle to the right front door. About a year later one the the front handles broke again and I went to the dealer. Lo and behold the price had dropped by more than half AND the new handles were modified to eliminate the problem of the originals. My dealer told me they were not released until all bad ones had been distributed to the dealers.
