Question Knocking from right front undercarriage

Brand New To The Forum

2 weeks ago I bought my son a 2005 PT Cruiser, 2.4L Turbo, approx. 80K miles. When we bought it, the seller said it needed front struts because it had a banging sound in the right front when you hit a bump. So today I changed out the struts but that wasn't the issue. While removing the right front strut, the right axel had about an inch and a half of play in and out of the trans case. The left side didn't appear to have this that I noticed. The boots were good and the CV joints made no noise. I also noticed that the lower control arm bushings on either side were well worn. I don't want to throw more money at it replacing parts without knowledge so I'm asking veteran PT Cruiser owners and mechanics for their opinions and experience on what the issue might be. Thanks for any help.

I would start with the wheel wiggle.

Jack the car up, Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and pull and push the wheel, then grab it at 3 and 9 and pull and push the wheel.

Any play? let us know

Suspension noises can come from several points:
Upper Strut Bearing
Lower control arm (Rear Bushing, Ball Joint, Not so much Front Bushing)
Sway bar bushings
Sway bar end anchors to Lower control arm
.

Bearing will whine or howl
Axle-CV-Joint must have in and out movemnet to accomodate wheel travel
Check the ball joint, its the most critical part, if it jumps out of the socket you will lose control.
Most I've see the grease fitting is broken off, so most likley the last grease it got was factory.
If it is loose / bad grease will not help. Replace the Lower Control Arm and youwill get new bushings too.

I would start with the sway bar bushings. simple and inexpensive.
