Default Dashboard is splitting-cracking-broken in pieces

Is anyone else having this problem-my 2001 P.T.'s dash is splitting and breaking into pieces very bad?

Yes, others have reported the same thing. Most likely the sun's heat causing the problem. There's no recall or TSB on it, you just have to replace it or buy a cover to hide it. If you do replace it, buy and use a cheap sunshade to protect the dash from cracking again.

The early taupe dashes seem to be more prone to cracking than the later ones.

Here's the original dash in my 2001 Limited.

So I found a black dash out of a 2004 PT. These black dashes seem to be more flexible and I have never seen a cracked one in a salvage PT.

I then mixed up some taupe paint from Home Depot and panted the dash with a roller and some small detail brushes.

Then a applied a coat of semi-gloss clear spray enamel. It turned out nicer than an original dash.

And here's my newly finished dash installed with a new center bezel.

recentley had the same problem when I removed dash from my 2002 PT, It just crumbled like a giant piece of peanut brittle, Picked up new one at dealer. I also keep it covered with a dash cover. The dash cover does not cover the vents, or speaker grills For sound, but I keep a couple small clothes handy to cover them up when not in use. Also saw a dash for 2001-2005 at wrecking yard it was also cracked. If you decide to purchase a dash from the dealer make sure you inspect it at the dealer before you leave, they told me there was no return because it was a special order. I didn't want to get home open the box and find a crack or blemish and not be able to return. They ask for your Vin number to get you the orignal color. anyway hope this helps.

So let me get this straight---we've got 12, 13, 14, even 15 year old cars that have probably sat out in the sun everyday for all that time and the plastic dashes are cracking. Hmmmmmmm.
