Default stripped transmission bolt holes. How to repair?

Ok so I made a mistake and 25 ft lbs was a bit too much and it turns out 15 looks a lot like 25 when you're tired. Needless to say I have two stripped bolt holes that gave way when I tried to torque.

My question is this, how difficult is it to drill and tap new holes? I've personally never done this before and am debating learning to do it myself vs taking it into a dealer or a shop and having them do it. The bolts don't fall out of the holes...But they never tighten either.

I would suggest looking into Time - Sert- Thread repair kits. They are available in both sae and metric in most all common sizes. These are actually when installed stronger then a tap and thread hole.

Does anyone know the exact thread diameter or size of these bolts?

IMO the better way is what Steve has suggested. Drilling and tapping on the cast aluminum may result in a bigger problem then what has already happened.

I can only assume on a time - sert you want to use a sealant on the insert?

Also in what ways are a heli coil unreliable? I've heard of them working before. Never used one. But I've heard mixed thoughts.

A helicoil needs to have some threads left in order to have strength. They are a good field bandage

A Time Sert is a complete unit that is usually stronger then the original threaded hole in most materials used on production vehicles. It is also is a permanent repair. .
