Lightbulb engine light, error codes do not start with P

Wife said the car made a noise, she parked and when turning it on again the 'faucet light' was on. Faucet light was the check engine...

I pressed the reset trip button while turning the key to acc and it does the light test and cycle the following on the odometer:

5 _ 9.7
1 _ 20.0
C _ 43.1
L _ 42.9

5 can be S and 1 can be I. Who knows...?

Anyone have any idea what that means? I did try the turn the key 2 times but it never worked. Would i have got different codes with that?

Get your self a proper code scanner like this

KW808 EOBD OBDII 2 Car Vehicle Engine Diagnostic Scanner Code Reader Tool HG | eBay

Its a good investment if your going to keep driving cars.

For years on end I did not own a code scanner because I thought they were to expensive. Now I have two of them one is much cheaper than the one I linked to. It came with a little book that you look the meanings of the codes up in, the more expensive one has them on the screen of the device.

It does have a book and a small CD you can put in your computer. The CD has instructions on how to use the code reader and also has the code definitions in a searchable data base so you just type in the code and it will bring the definition up on your screen.

The book also has instructions on how to use the code reader and the detailed definitions in it.

OK, i misread the getting codes thread the first time. i had to turn the key 3 times , not 2.

after doing it correctly i get:

---------
- done -

still no errors. would the code reader show any code or if there is nothing on this method will also have nothing with the reader? i will probably buy one regardless

There may still be some hidden or stored codes but if they don't show with the 'key dance' they probably are not currently effecting your car performance.

The wording of your original post makes me think your wife parked the car then turned the engine off then turned the key back on when the CEL came on, I'm wondering if the engine was restarted or not.

It would be normal for the check engine light and pretty much everything else to come on if the engine was not restarted.

The holding the trip meter reset button thing tests the instrument pod, things like all your gauges cycle through. You do that when your speedometer or tach are not working right.

Yes, a code reader will give you pending codes also...problems that you have that haven't made the CEL come on.

i couldn't book a mechanic here yet so i took a look myself yesterday. the oil stick was dry!

i put in 1qt of 20w-50 or something like that that is thicker than required just to not let it dry (though i can't care less for weight in warn socal i will take to a place for a proper oil change today.

is this normal? to not have the idiot light to go on when out oil? the light test show that the light works... maybe the sensor is busted?

anyway, after putting in the quart and turning the engine there was no more check engine light

opted to get a RS232 serial reader instead of the ones with display that are sure to be extremely limited.

finally got the reader. $15 for a "elm327" that when i opened does NOT have an elm chip, but a generic PIC microcontroller programmed to emulate an elm327. that's is fine, despite the lame misuse of the brand. then the CD rom comes with a $40 windows software with a keygen.exe ... sigh. that is blatantly a crime. i'm still debating if i call amazon.

anyway, thankfully it is easy to use it via linux. so reading the codes showed nothing to report.

i'm convinced now that the light only came on because of the very low oil level/pressure (does it even have a pressure oil sensor?). and i'm flabbergasted that it never lighted the oil light. damn Chrysler.

btw, there is a slight chance i did things wrong while communicating. it showed ecu#2... no idea if that is right. here is what i used

baud 38400
ECU: $7E9
ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/500)

Yes there is an oil pressure sending unit on the back side near the top {in the block not the actual head} of the engine on the drivers side end of the engine.

They can go bad, although I have not had any problems with my PT both of our '05 and '06 Neon STX's had to have them replaced.

The oil light would come on after starting then stay on while driving. My wife worried that there was no oil pressure when the light was on so I looked it up on line and showed her reports on how it was just the bad sending unit and the oil pressure was probably fine.

She being a woman would not except that so I spent the thirty odd dollars for a new sending unit and installed it.

On the '05 {it was our first STX} I also installed a pipe 'T' so I could install a proper mechanical oil pressure gauge and the electric sensor. The mechanical gauge showed at least 20 pounds of pressure at an idle when the engine was warm proving that there was no problem the whole time the light was out.

The manual gauge would go as high as 50 PSI at highway speeds so I was pretty sure the oil pump was working fine. I read somewhere that it only takes 5 PSI {or less} to actuate the electric sensors and put the light out.

I also have a cheap ELM327 reader that I thought would work with my android tablet but it does not. It will pair but not connect. It does however work great with my daughters 'smart' phone. I paid for the Torque app and installed it on her phone but she rarely ever has her phone here when I need to check a CEL. I installed the ELM327 thing in the car she drives so if she gets a CEL she can read the code and tell it to me when she calls asking why she has a CEL on.

Fortunately this has not happened since she has had the thing.

The oil light only comes on due to low oil pressure not low quantity. As long as the oil sump can pic up the oil the sensor wont know you're low on oil. The 'faucet light' may have been the oil light she saw. No record will be kept of this. To my knowledge.
