Default Cooling Fan Assembly

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser (non turbo) and I need a cooling fan assembly. The problem arises when I look on Advance Auto Parts (where I work, so I get a discount) there is two assemblies without controllers (do I need controllers?), but one comes with a 4/pin harness with relays (it literally shows 3 pins on their website though) and the other with 3/pin harness and no relays. There is also a 4 prong SQUARE connector assembly at RockAuto.

So confused. I'm no car expert obviously, but I have done routine repairs. Is this something I can walk outside and unplug it and just check the prong connector? How hard is it to replace it? Assuming I can even find the correct assembly.

I can post links if needed, but it says I would have to wait for mods to accept it I assume. Just let me know, thanks.

Also how bad would it be if the timing belt has never been changed in 148k miles?

You can do this two different ways.

You can go to the dealer with your VIN # and they will tell you exactly what radiator fan you have in your PT Cruiser.

Or you can get under the PT Cruiser and look at the radiator fan connector. IF you have a grey plug you have the four pin connector. If you have the black plug you have the three pin plug. You should be able to see the radiator fan relays on your PT Cruiser that are attached to the radiator fan housing. I would recommend unplugging the radiator fan just to make sure what number of pins you have.

It only take about an hour to replace it and there are threads on how to replace the radiator fan.

I would recommend you introduce yourself to the forum and include some details of your PT Cruiser.

This is from the earlier model cruisers but basically they are the same. In the picture, you can see the fan electrical connection that needs to come apart. You can check to see the wires.

Also, from the earlier models....

Removing the fan and housing 01-05 PT

I believe the G2's 2006-2010 all have the 4 pin square connecter.

I could not make this statement because there are some 2006 PT Cruisers that are manufactured in 2005 and I am not sure of when they switched over to the 4 pin square connector.

Thanks everyone. Ill take a look under it today and see which prong connector it is. After watching that YT video it doesn't look that hard at all. Will just do it myself.

I would suggest making sure you remove the battery and the battery support plate to make it easier to remove the radiator fan. This will ensure the radiator does not get damaged removing the old radiator fan and installing the new radiator fan.

I replaced mine (also an 06) last year, it had both a 3 prong and square 4. so either one should work.

06OregonCruiser,
Can you post when your 2006 was manufactured on the driver's side door?
