Default Swapping the motor '01 & '07

Can a 2001 motor (and other parts under the hood) be used in a 2007 cruiser?

It will be very difficult.

In 2003, Chrysler change the way the crank sensor worked. Not only is the location different on the engine block, but it also feeds a different type of signal. And the number of teeth on the sensor ring on the crank shaft are different. I have found no one that has found a way to adapt a 2003 and later engine to the pre-2003 electronics on a PT Cruiser.

The only way to make this work is likely going to be to trade out all electronics with the engine. And going from a 2007 to a 2001 will again be next to impossible. Instead, it would be much easier just to find a 2001 or 2002 engine to put in your 2001 PT. They are a "dime a dozen" at salvage yards.

Yep. For a 2007, you will need a 2003 or newer PT engine. There may be be some slight differences in the some of the accessory parts, but the ones from the original 2007 should bolt right on.

One other issue is the clocking of the cam sensor magnet. You will need to check the position of the sensor magnet dowel holes on the end of the intake camshaft on your original engine with the engine at top dead center. Then check the donor engine to assure the position is the same at top dead center. Some have reported that some PT engines have different sensor clocking positions.
