Maybe the manufacture doesn't want to guarantee it will go x number of miles so they decided to trigger the fuel light when it gets down to approximately 1 gallon (on my PT Cruisers). Force us to get fuel immediately.

The standard is normally 3 gallons left when the gas light comes on.

this is what one of my shop manuals says:

When the fuel level drops to about 1/8 tank the fuel symbol will light and a sinlgle chime will sound. The light will remain on until fuel is added. If the fuel level drops to approximately 1.0 gallon the fuel symbol will flash several times and the chime will sound several times." It sounds like a "I've told you once, this is my final warning" type set-up.

These fuel tanks are 15 gallon tanks. 1/8 of 15 gallons is 1.875 gallons. Some PT Cruisers will have little more and some will have a little less when the fuel light comes on.

Anybody ever checked theirs with an ultra-gauge? :-)
I would, but my tank never tends to get below 1/3rd full...

I checked this a few months ago...I can't find my post...but if I remember right it's 1 gallon or about 20 miles.
Then it takes about a mile of driving for the light to go out once you add gas.

It's been said a few times on this forum and the information came from one of the experts that used to be here who had his own shop. The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. It's lubricated and cooled by the fuel itself. Running the tank down to nearly empty, your taking a big chance of burning out the pump. Take that for what it's worth ....and the pump it worth about $300 without the labor to replace it.

I had the fuel pump replaced several months ago in my PT due to a hard starting issue on a cold engine, it cost $535 at a dealership. Now I will take better care of the replacement and I will not let the tank get below 1/4.

I have a rule of thumb, fill your tank when it gets to a half a tank fill it again.

Think of it the way you should think of your life, half full not half empty. You life as well the fuel pump will live longer.

The rest CREWZIN said it BEST.

Most (not all) the fuel pumps in an EFI engine I have changed for customers over the years clearly was shown to be running the fuel at or near empty frequently.

There is no standard for a fuel light to come. That is determined by the auto makers designers, model vehicle and fuel type used.
