Default CHECKING YOUR PT AIR BAGS FOR RECALL

For ease of mind relative to the current scare about the Takata air bags and our PT's, it can be checked by going to; safecar.gov
At this site you'll be able to choose Chrysler, then PT Cruiser, and then come to a page that has an entry place for your specific Vin number. There's a check underneath this entry where you have to type in a few characters you'll see that confirm your a human I guess.
The next page will be a readout of outstanding recalls or a clean bill of health on your PT.
My SOO BIG is fine. I hope yours is too. ptprice

Ran both my PT and the wife's new Chevy Cruze as soon as I saw the story on the TV news last night. No recalls.

Also from the SaferCar.gov website:

"Please Note: If you are checking to see if your vehicle is affected by the Takata air bag recalls, it generally takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks for automakers to gather individual VINs associated with a recall. It is important that you check back periodically as a recall on your vehicle may not show up immediately."

I also checked the Vin number on my friend 2006 Toyota Avalon. It did show a recall involving using incorrect replacement brake fluid and that being a possible cause of breaking down the brake system seals and lines, but no problems with the air bags. This info will be helpful for my friend as she'll pass it on to her trusted mechanic. So the site does give you a good overview of your vehicle recalls.
Toyota did admit that their 2004-05 Rav4 Toyota's does have these Takata airbags, but the solution for now was a non solution, "we don't have the correct parts at the moment for correction but will notify when available." Thanks again rckstein for the correction on my error on the site address safercars.gov ptprice

From another website on the recall:

"On Tuesday Takata doubled the size of its recall to 33.8 million air bags, making it the largest recall in U.S. history.

The number of impacted vehicles and manufacturers in combination with the supply issues related to these air bag recalls adds a previously unprecedented level of complexity to this recall," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind wrote in papers posted Thursday in the Federal Register.

The agency wants to accelerate the recall process, which could take more than 2 1/2 years to complete at the current pace of production of replacement parts. Takata says it has increased production to 500,000 inflators per month with plans to make up to 1 million monthly by September. So far it has manufactured about 3.8 million replacements."

Is there a safe and easy way to check the air bags themselves? I had a fender bender in my 2005 Cruiser in 2006 and the air bags went off, and were replaced. No record on carmax and the body shop has gone out of business. Since no Cruisers have been involved in the recall (so far), I have a degree of confidence that the replacement air bags are OK, too; but then again, I am an idiot.
