Default Temperature light on/temp ice old?

I was driving to work and the car is running fine but the light just came on for temperature. The temperature just dropped to ice cold like the car had not been started? I haven't had any work done recently.

Does this sound like a simple broken thermostat?

Wow, that was fast! It is the temperature over heating code.

I have to get that. Going to take it to PEP Boys after work to check what code is coming up. I have the over heating light coming on now.

Have you checked to make sure you have coolant in the radiator. When the engine is cold take the radiator cap off and make sure it filled up to the top of the radiator. Do not trust the coolant overflow tank. You might have a coolant leak and not be aware of it.

Could it be empty and the over flow be full?

If you have a leak in the hose between the radiator cap and the coolant overflow tank you could be getting air in the coolant system.

Is that why the actual temperature cage is on ice cold?

First thing I do when there is any indication of engine temperature problems is to check and make sure there is coolant in the radiator. Recently I looked at a used PT Cruiser for sale and the owner mentioned how the engine temperature was normal but the engine had overheated and locked up the motor. The owner found out later that the water pump had been leaking and there was no coolant in the engine.
