Default How to install license plate fasteners?

Hi all,

My rear license plate currently has 1/4" screws screwed right into the rear bumper, with no nut or fastener. The top right screw hole is a little big, so the screw won't tighten down.

I purchased these fasteners (see pic) but am unsure how to install them.
I assume that I have to drill a hole in the bumper, and then press fit the fastener in the hole? Am I correct?

If so, my next question is how do I figure out what size hole to drill?

Thank you.

These go into a square hole.

I would drill a hole slightly smaller than the small square portion that goes into the bumper. Then take a small flat or triangle shaped file and square the corners. Starting smaller and working towards making the hole square for a snug fit, removing a little at a time because if you take away too much, then you'll have to get a bigger fastener.

Here is an easy way. Just follow rckstein's advice. Unless you get a square jointer bit. Yes they do make them.

I don't think this will work very well as it works best if the material you are trying to drill square has a firm backing, then the sharp square chisel portion will make a clean cut. I think the thin bumper skin will just flop around and not produce a nice clean square hole, but I could be wrong.

This is a mortising bit. And sadly you guys missed my joke. But the op can follow the post #3 and accomplish the job.

I think Todd needs to start a Handy_Cruiser thread on how to install a licence plate?
