Is the button on top of the gear shift knob stuck in or can you still push it in and it pops out?

Your PT Cruiser uses a shift-interlock system to prevent you from moving the shifter when it may be unsafe to do so, such as shifting with the ignition off, or when shifting out of Park without pressing and holding the brake pedal first.

Where was the transmission when you turned the car off in the first place? You shouldn't have been able to remove the key or turn the engine off if it was in gear.

It was in gear. You don't even have to push the brake down to put it in gear. When you drive down the road it keeps making the ding sound if you got a door open and on the dash it pops ups and say door then goes away for a minute then does it again don't know if that is relayed ?

I would suggest you check the shift position switch and the stop light switch. The shift lock system controls the operation of the key lock solenoid based on the signal from the shift position and stop light switch.

Is the shift position switch and the stop light switch located in the steering column ?

Stop light switch- brake light switch is the little white switch with the black plunger that is activated by the brake pedal. If you remove it (DON't) it is a one time adjustable then throw it away.
If your brake lights are working don't take it off.
If your brake lights are not work check bulbs and sockets then voltage to lights.

On the stop light switch I would suggest checking it with an ohm meter without removing it as JoeX had posted above that it is not adjustable after the first time its installed.
