Question A BAD 2001 PT Cruiser stick shift problem!

Hello all,
Its been a while since I was on the forum....

I was ready to drive out of my homes parking lot.
As I was backing out. When I was close to the street ,
the shifter lost connection!
I could not connect to reverse or forward.
The shifter moved very loosely with no connections at all.
I turned the PT off and tried to reconnect it.
It felt like it would so I turned the PT back on and I was able to reconnect to the forward shifter movement,,not reverse.
Then it became loose again with NO connection.
I turned the PT off and tried again,,I was able to drive it back up to the front of my garage,, Again,,it lost connection to any shifting..The shifter once again it very loose with no connection.
Can anyone PLEASE advise me as what I must do??
I am so very concerned...thankfully I am off tomorrow so I need to have this fixed so I can get to work on Saturday!!

the shift linkage is located on the drivers side between the air box and engine its probably came loose...remove the air box to check

booger racing - booger bushings/

Link to the site that has pictures. I replaced mine under the airbox, then about 10,000 miles later, replaced the ones under the console (where your stick shift is)...that was a pain to remove the console, but haven't had an issue since (another 20,000 miles). Well worth the $22.00 for the full set.

Definitely sounds like a cable or bushing problem to me too. And I haven't owned a stick in about 10 years.

I really thank you guys for the responses!

This morning, I will begin working on it in just a few minutes from now.

Could the disconnection be directly underneath the stick/console?
When I move the stick it is VERY loose feeling.
I guess that could be from the disconnection under the air-box too ,,right?

I just opened the drivers-side of the engine,,removing the air-box.
I see that the shift linkage is connected.
I was able to shift it with my hand. It seems OK there.

As I mentioned earlier, the stick it is VERY loose feeling at the console.
I would move it around and it feels like there is no connection to the cable.
At times if I moved the stick certain ways,,it would connect to the 'forward' cable but it seems not to connect with the 'reverse'
Then, it would not connect with any of it once again!
How do I remove the console ?

Hi MJKnight !!

Thanks for that image....
Earlier I tried to take the console off ..I did unscrew it at the front and back but, I could not get it out..I tried my best to.
My wife and I decided to have it taken to NTB...also I will rent a car for the time being..unfortunately.
We have been planning to trade it in later this year for a newer PT!!

I really appreciate this forum!!

Looks like there's about 6 screws total. How many did you remove? I've never seen a console that I couldn't remove.
