Default Muffler / safety question

Hi all.

I'm about to trade in my 2001 PT Cruiser Limited for a new car and last week the muffler became very loud. Sorry, I'm not mechanically inclined so not looking to repair if avoidable. Car has 122K miles. In looking under the car, the pipe from the muffler going back towards the converter and engine look fine and I see no holes of any kind. While idling, I don't detect any exhaust smell near the car or inside the car. It seems (may be my imagination) that the gas mileage is less now.

Question, am I safe to drive this to various car dealers to get a "trade in value"? I am hoping I can get at least $2000 towards a new car vs trying to sell it privately and having to put more money in the car.

Thoughts? And thank you for putting up with a silly question from a non mechanical person.

You shouldn't have any problems driving it...but it might loose you money in the trade because it's loud & they're gonna try & tell you it needs a CAT.

First, there little concern driving the car. It's sitting still with the engine running that might be hazardous if the exhaust is leaking.

Second, very few car dealers would actually want a 2001 PT Cruiser for a trade in. The way I would handle this is to find the new or newer car I wanted to buy and then offer my PT as a trade in. The dealer will say the PT is not worth much but offer me something for it to make me feel good. After I get that number, I'd then tell the dealer I want the new car for THAT price without my PT as a trade in. Chances are the dealer will go for it because that's less work for them.

Then you can sell your PT on Craigs list or just keep it for a backup car.

Anything under 5000 is pretty much a give away when trading for a new car. You would be better off bargaining on a streight out deal. Depending on what price of vehicle. I would offer 4 to 5 thousand less that the sticker. And work from there. Probobly more than you will get for you car. Then like previously stated you can sell it.

If you are close to NW NJ, I have a complete stock exhaust you can have that I would even put on for you for free (It isn't hard to do) that is like new - I traded in my '02 PT with an aftermarket exhaust, and I have no use for the exhaust.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for all the advice! And special thanks to quicksilverdon for the offer of a exhaust system! I live in CT so it's a bit of a drive but I will see what happens with the dealers and, if I keep the car, I may take you up on the offer!

I have my house for sale - if the house sells, the exhaust goes in garbage.
