Unhappy New owner - Can't program keyfob

I inherited my mom's 2004 Pt Cruiser, which she bought at a dealer and never had a keyfob for. It's odd, because they did all of the maintenance, and I would think they would hook her up with a keyfob if possible.

Now I am the owner of the car, bought a used keyfob off ebay from a seller a lot of them.

I've followed these instructions but am completely unsuccessful - there is no chime or response:

Quote:
1. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn the switch to the ON position.

2. Press and hold the Unlock button on the transmitter between four and ten seconds.

3. continue to hold the unlock button and press the Panic button. A chime will sound to indicate that the transmitter programming mode has been entered.

4. Press a button on all transmitters to be programmed to the system, including any previously programmed transmitters. A chime will sound when each transmitter has been programmed.

5. Turn the ignition switch off to exit the transmitter programming mode."
a) Are these the correct instructions?

b) Any way to tell if I have a bad keyfob (certainly possible)? I replaced the CR2016 batteries with new ones.

c) Is it possible the 'receiver' part of the keyfob system is not working (what would this part be?), and that is perhaps why she never had a keyfob when she bought it used in 2005?

Don't want to ask a stupid question, but...
Since she bought the car new & never had a fob...does the car have an alarm or power locks..??

I'm not sure if it has an alarm, but it has power locks.

Cool Re: New owner - Can't program keyfob

When I buy a key fob off of eBay, I am sure to match the same type of key fob.
As, depending on options, the key fob will look different, and do many, or no functions except the door.
And, that is my experience from just putting info such as "2010 PT Cruiser key fob".
You may not end up with what you need.
And, since YOU ARE NOT SURE, you will likely have to rely on a Chrysler dealer to do it for you.

**Besides, I always thought that you had to have one key fob already programmed, in order to program a second one.
Maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like I may just be better off hitting up a dealer, since they will have the resources to resolve it regardless.
